Our Neighbor Jack

So... let me start this post out by saying these two things...
1. This is not a picture of Jack
2. Jack is the worlds best neighbor - and none of these comments are in bad humor, we love him, really we do.

Jack is a retired Boeing Engineer and he still thinks 110% like an engineer. He is always tinkering with things here and there to better our suroundings, and this has led him to set timers on our Christmas (and other holiday) lights, and PVC pipe handrails (yes, you heard me PVC pipe).

A couple years ago during Christmas he asked if he could "camp on" to the end of our string of lights since ours are hooked up to a timer (courtesy of him) so he didn't have to turn them on and off every day. I was more than happy to have two or three extra strands of lights as they don't suck much power, and we love Jack. A few days after this conversation there was a note taped to our door with two $1 bills. He had calculated out the wattage that his lights took and what it would cost us to light his Christmas lights for the season. It came out to $1.62, but he didn't want to leave coins, so he rounded up.

He's a pretty special guy. So we'll often include him on our summer desserts as we're both on the deck often, and he'll play with Gracie from time to time when she's on the deck. We'd do most anything to make Jack happy and he us. We are thrilled to have such a great neighbor.

Today, I was walking downstairs to throw some trash out, and I ran into Jack who, surprise surprise was working on his car down stairs - he's a tinkerer. He was a little sad that his car isn't doing as well (he drives an 89 Lincoln Towncar) as normal, so we chatted a while. While I was walking away I commented that his Christmas decorations (yes, it's March - they're still up) could pass for St. Patricks Day since they're mostly green. He said he would love it if he had a little leprechaun to put in the middle of his wreath... so I made him one.

Nothing says St. Patties day like a Christmas wreath and a Leprechaun.

Oh Jack... Thank you for making me smile, Often!

My Happy Place

I have a lot of happy space in my world - but the happiest of all is Marvista Park in Normandy Park, just a few short miles from my house. It's the one place where I can go, be a kid, and then feel completely refreshed afterwards. Vacation is coming... T minus a few weeks now, and I feel like I've earned the crap out of it this year! But until then, a weekly trip to my happy place with the furry one should do it!  I love his little feet trying to take on the leaves! So cute.

The Wreath

It all started with Pinterest - yes, that rant about Pinterest still stands, but this was inspired from there. I wanted to recreate a wreath of bulbs, I hate buying wreaths since they expire year after year, this one will hang in my home for a LONG time, possibly till I die... that is how much I love how it turned out! So, being my crafty (and somewhat frugal) self, I set off to find the materials to make it. Finding that bulbs are not quite as cheap as you'd expect, I found them for 80% off.  This wreath, at cost would have run me about $125. ACK! I made it for under 35%! So pretty! So pleased! Many have asked me to make one for them - my answer - you buy the bulbs and materials and I'll glue it together!

Thoughts of the American Pride Persuasion

I sat, mesmerized as I watched the “Breaking News” of the past 24 hours – Osama Bin Laden, Dead. What? I can’t really deny my mixed feelings about posting today. I don’t normally jump into the political rings but I can’t deny the HUGE news that swept our nation yesterday. So, this post has been thought out, a lot, typed really slowly, every word, intentional. Which is a huge leap from my normal ramblings of a Monday morning. We were sitting on the couch watching a movie, the movie ended and Eric turned on the news, and we watched, in awe. Just like September 11 th , I’ll always remember where I was when I heard the news. I can’t say I was ready to strap on a flag superhero cape style, and run up and down the street chanting “USA… USA… USA” like hundreds and thousands of other Americans in DC and New York, but then again, I wasn’t near ground zero, in Pennsylvania or at the pentagon the day that Osama Bin Laden became a household name. The American in me wants to be happy and
